At Canada Wood we can offer a full comprehensive planning service tailored to meet your needs. This can range from just giving simple initial planning advice in order to give you peace of mind regarding our buildings or uses that may well be permitted development already in some circumstances, right through to detailed submissions and negotiations with the local planning authority regarding dwellings or major developments. Because we know our product inside out, we’re able to advise effectively and accurately on where they fit within the existing UK planning system and with all of the relevant rules and regulations. This service is offered in a flexible and professional format using our experienced in-house planning consultant as well as our own knowledge of the buildings themselves. We offer a fixed fee preliminary site visit, consultation and written follow-up report assessing all of the options and setting out the best way forward. Should this include any form of planning application or other formal submissions these are fully costed, upfront, and can be undertaken on your behalf by us. The trees are hand felled during the winter months to allow for a low sap content, hence extending the lifespan of the timber. The bark is then removed by hand. The logs are then sanded down ready for the building to commence.
Peeling is a very labour intensive process that can be half the time of the total build. Removing the bark and underlying cambium (sap) layer from the wood prevents insect attack and the development of mould.
Log structures offer many benefits – one being the reduction of noise pollution. The density of a solid log wood wall significantly reduces sound transmission, whilst the profile of the log deflects sound.
A hand crafted log cabin still uses a natural log. The only change is that it has undergone the removal of the outer bark. This gives a uniqueness that a machined log simply cannot match. You will typically find that the handcrafted log cabin has a larger diameter and length than a machined cabin which is beneficial in thermal performance and fire resistance values.
Your cabin, if left untreated will naturally turn grey, this is the effect of the ultra violet rays that will break down a woods finish, the more pigment a wood has the better it will resist UVA rays. A darker wood will maintain its colour for longer. Here at Canada Wood we use Cutek, a treatment that is specially formulated to resist fungus and mould, it is also designed to penetrate deeply, providing water repellancy. This treatment also gives you the option of choosing the colour you wish your cabin to maintain, as you may prefer the natural greying, or may wish to stain the wood completely, there are various colours to choose from.
Settling describes the loss of log wall height over time. Normally, 90% of this settling will occur in the first two years, and will be completely finished by the end of year five after completion of the build. We allow for this by using a technique called over-scribing, which will ensure the log walls remain weather tight and allow for shrinkage and the compression of the building.
Thermal mass refers to the log walls capacity to absorb, store and slowly release heat over time. Logs have thermal mass because of their cellular structure, bulk and thickness. This thermal mass provides significant energy saving benefits because it releases heat back into the house when temperatures drop. Because of this thermal mass, fully scribed log homes in most situations are 20-30% more energy efficient in terms of heating and cooling than other builds. They will stay cool in the summer and warm throughout the winter.
