This Christmas tree farm needed a new shop and offices and the completed building also had to contain a kitchen, shower and disabled toilets.
First of all we selected timber from our forest for size and straightness, that was felled during the winter months to ensure a low sap content. Once we had all the logs they were hand peeled to remove the bark. After peeling, we started building the cabin at our premises completing as much as the construction as possible.
This build was particularly challenging because the cabin was very long and sits on two levels, so the building was constructed in four sections and joined on site.
The groundwork required demolition of an existing building and laying of the split level foundation for the new cabin. Accuracy was needed in transferring dimensions from site to ensure that the finished building sat exactly on the foundations and errors did not introduce ugly gaps in the structure.
With the log construction and groundwork complete, finished logs were numbered and moved to the final site. Rebuilding the cabin walls on site is a very fast process and can often be completed in hours. In this case, the four sections of the building were built by stacking the precut logs and joined ready for windows and doors to be fitted. Once the composite roof was on the internal surfaces were finished with drywall, independently fixed to allow for movement and settling of the logs.
